Sound is the cheapest way to make a small game feel ten times better. A jump "boing", a coin "ding", a loop of music. Done.

The short pick

For sound effects: jsfxr — free, runs in your browser at sfxr.me, classic 8-bit presets (coin, jump, explosion, hit), exports WAV ✅. Not "AI", but it's the fastest route for retro games.

For AI-generated realistic SFX: ElevenLabs Sound Effects — type "wooden door creaks open slowly" and get a clip. Starter plan $6/mo ✅ (30,000 credits/mo; each sound-effect generation costs about 200 credits ✅; Starter includes a commercial license ✅). ElevenLabs is running a first-month promo on Starter until Oct 18.

For music: Suno — generate tracks from a text prompt. Pro is $10/mo (or $8/mo billed annually) ✅ per suno.com. Important: per Suno's help docs, songs made on the free plan can't be monetized, and commercial rights apply to songs made while you're subscribed ✅.

How to start

  1. List every sound your game needs (usually 6–10): jump, land, hit, collect, die, menu click, win.
  2. Make placeholders in jsfxr in 10 minutes. Put them in the game now.
  3. Replace only the sounds that feel wrong with AI-generated ones.
  4. For music, generate 3–4 options for one loop and keep it under 60 seconds. Ask the AI coder to loop it and lower the volume to ~40%.
  5. Keep a CREDITS.md noting which tool made each file and on which plan — you'll need it if you sell the game.
